Morehouse Maroon Tigers remain undefeated in triple overtime nail-biter
By: Brianna Williams
Another week means another win for the Morehouse Maroon Tigers. Morehouse narrowly escaped with a victory over SIAC rival Tuskegee to remain undefeated in the conference and on the season. Despite the Tigers winning their last three games by a total of 10 points combined, it doesn’t appear that any team can stop them.
The Maroon Tigers’ latest thriller was certainly their most dramatic as it went to triple overtime in the 83rd Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic at A.J. McClung Stadium in Columbus, Georgia.
The Tuskegee Golden Tigers appeared to be preparing for another win in this series until Morehouse scored on a trick play to tie the game with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The first overtime told the tale of HBCU kicking as neither the Maroon nor Golden Tigers were able to get the ball between the uprights and over the crossbar to end the game.
The Golden Tigers pounced first in the second OT with a 10 yard run for a touchdown by wide receiver Javarrius Cheatham. Morehouse’s sophomore running back Santo Dunn followed up with a 16 yard touchdown run of his own to tie the game at 24-24 send these teams to a third overtime.
Dunn picked up the third OT where he left off in the second as he scored his third touchdown of the day from 14 yards out. The Golden Tigers entered the game with the SIAC’s top defense, but it was the Maroon Tiger defense that stepped up as they stopped the Tuskegee offense on a crucial fourth and one. This stop was enough to seal the deal and sent Morehouse to the win column. With the final score being 30-24, this marks Morehouse’s first victory over Tuskegee since 2011.
From their season-opener win against a Division-I FCS opponent to their latest win over a division rival, the Maroon Tigers have shown just how they thrive in the face of adversity. This game was just the second in a six game stretch versus fellow SIAC squads. At 6-0, the Tigers are the only undefeated HBCU football team in the country. Their next two opponents, Albany State and Benedict are also undefeated in conference play. As of right now it doesn’t appear that any team, SIAC or otherwise, is equipped to bring down The House.
